For decades, many people fought to save land-based ecosystems. The result: protected forests, mountains, rivers, valleys, lakes, and, in turn, the essential habitat of many species that rely on these areas.Yet, very little of our ocean ecosystems are protected. In fact, less than one percent of the ocean is protected globally.
Today, organizations like CPAWS and WWF-Canada turn their efforts towards ocean conservation. Our mission: to protect the health of marine ecosystems. Globally, oceans are at a tipping point. We must act now to protect struggling species and vulnerable marine environments, from the surface of the seas to the ocean floors.
